Emergency Department at NSUH
The Emergency Department (ED) at North Shore University Hospital, Manhasset is a designated New York State Regional Level I Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center equipped and prepared to treat all levels of emergency cases, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The physicians and nurses of the ED care for more than 70,000 patients per year. It is our objective to be the preeminent provider of quality emergency healthcare in the Northeast, a sponsor of medical and educational excellence, a leader in medical research and a focal point for the community's healthcare needs.
The Department is staffed by board-certified Emergency Medicine physicians, resident physicians, registered nurses, technicians and other ancillary and support staff. Each of these individuals serves as a crucial component of a team that treats a widely diverse patient population consisting of trauma and high-acuity medical, surgical, pediatric, and gynecological conditions. Pediatric cases comprise a substantial portion of our total volume. The overall admission rate of 40% reflects the high level of critical illness in our patients.
In addition to our clinical practices, the ED is committed and dedicated to participation in various research objectives. With the Clinical Research Program leading the way, additional interests are encouraged and conducted under the Basic Science Research Program. The two components are tied together through the Translational Research Program, which aids in the successful transition of basic science research to practical clinical application.
The ED at Manhasset recently completed an extensive capital project that expanded and renovated the department. The newly designed department is now composed entirely of private treatment rooms that are dedicated to critical care, pediatrics, psychiatry, isolation, dental, ophthalmology, orthopedics and gynecology. In total, we have 54 treatment rooms as well as an advanced diagnostic imaging area and a recently installed PACS system which allows us to view digital radiology images. The most recently renovated area is the space dedicated to triage, restoration and waiting, which now provides our patients and families with a comfortable and aesthetically pleasing setting with a greater degree of privacy.
