Bladder Tumor Symptoms and Causes

A bladder tumor usually starts from the cells lining the bladder. These bladder tumors are
classified by the way they grow and can be benign or cancerous:

  • Papillary tumors are attached to a stalk and have a wart-like appearance.
  • Sessile or nonpapillary tumors are less common, but more invasive.

Causes of bladder tumors include:

  • Exposure to cancer-causing chemicals
  • Smoking tobacco
  • Chronic urinary tract infections
  • Schistosomiasis, a parasitic infection common in the tropics.

Symptoms of bladder tumors include:

  • Blood in the urine (very common in bladder cancer)
  • A feeling that you urgently need to pass urine
  • The need to pass urine more frequently
  • Often pass smaller amounts of urine
  • Back or abdominal pain
  • Appetite loss
  • Weight loss
