Certified First Responder Course

Certified First Responder Course

The Certified First Responder Course offered at the Emergency Medical Institute is a 70-hour curriculum, which consists of didactic lectures and skills labs. This comprehensive program satisfies the training requirements set forth by the State of New York Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Bureau. Upon successful completion of all course requirements, students will be eligible to participate in the New York State Certifying Practical and Written Examinations. Classes are typically conducted two evenings a week from 7 PM to 10 PM at various locations throughout the County of Nassau. This is an entry level course.

Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the Certified First Responder will demonstrate competency in:

  • Patient Assessment
  • Trauma Care
  • Managing Medical Emergencies
  • Utilization of Basic Life Support Equipment
  • Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Hemorrhage Control
  • Fracture and Spinal Stabilization
  • Managing Environmental Emergencies
  • Emergency Childbirth
  • Use of a Semi-Automatic Defibrillator

New York State Certified First Responder Requirements:

  • Successful Course Completion
  • Pass Practical and Written Examinations
  • Be at least 16 years of age

Certified First Responder Attributes:

  • Communicate verbally; via telephone and radio equipment
  • Lift, carry, and balance up to 125 pounds (250 lbs. with assistance)
  • Interpret written, oral and diagnostic reports
  • Utilize good judgment and remain calm in high-stress situations
  • Be unaffected by loud noises and flashing lights
  • Interpret English language manuals and road maps
  • Interview patient, family members and by-standers
  • Document all relevant information
  • Communicate with co-workers and hospital staff alike
