The Drug Treatment and Education Center, founded in 1971, is a comprehensive, hospital-based outpatient facility designed to offer comprehensive psychosocial, medical and psychiatric assessment and treatment services to individuals with and their families.
The Drug Treatment and Education Center, part of the Division of Addiction Treatment services at North Shore University Hospital provides an extensive range of therapeutic services. Services include diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, education and prevention. The Center offers medically supervised outpatient treatment in a variety of modalities. It also provides outpatient opiate detoxification.
Any person at least 16 years of age who has substance abuse or alcohol use problems can use our services. Services are specifically developed to meet the needs of addicted and substance abusing individuals and their families.
A Wide Range of Services
The Center provides a variety of services offered in a therapeutic setting. These include:
- Individual psychotherapy
- Early recovery groups
- Adolescent/young adult groups
- Group psychotherapy
- Impaired professional groups
- Nurse’s recovery group
- HIV support group
- HIV Gay Men’s Support Group
- Mentally Ill Chemically Addicted (MICA) Group
- Parent Consultation
- Family Therapy
- Marital/Couple Therapy
- Daytime Intensive Outpatient Services (5 times per week for 8 weeks)
- Evening Intensive Outpatient Services (4 times per week for 12 weeks)
- Outpatient Opiate Detoxification
- DETOX Group
- Psychiatric Evaluation
- Forensic Drug Testing
An interdisciplinary professional team assesses each individual’s treatment needs. A comprehensive evaluation by an interdisciplinary team includes psychosocial history, medical review, psychiatric evaluation, family and couple evaluation.
The staff is made up of trained practitioners in medicine, nursing, psychiatry, psychology and social work. In addition to individual specialties, each staff member is trained in the team approach to treating patients’ problems. Other personnel include psychiatrist, social workers, and psychologists in training.
Federal Law and Regulations protect the confidentiality of alcohol and drug abuse treatment records. New York State Law protects HIV patient records. Your privacy is fully protected.
Hours and Fees
The Drug Treatment and Education Center is open during the following hours:
- Monday and Wednesday: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Tuesday, and Thursday: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Friday: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Treatment fees are based on a sliding scale reflecting the patient’s ability to pay. The Center recognizes Medicaid eligibility and accepts payment from a variety of insurance plans.
