The Acute Pain Management Service at North Shore-LIJ is an inpatient consult service that assists patients with postoperative, post-traumatic and other types of acute pain that require specialized interventions, such as epidural analgesia, intravenous patient controlled analgesia (IVPCA) and continuous peripheral nerve blocks. The goal is to safely provide optimal pain management with a balance of pain relief techniques and treatment of side effects.

Our skilled professionals have expertise in postoperative pain control and provide coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Patients receiving acute pain management services are visited daily -- more often if necessary -- by an anesthesiologist and registered nurse who evaluate and adjust the doses of the medications with an emphasis on patient comfort and safety.

On the Cutting Edge
The Cardiovascular Anesthesiology team at North Shore-LIJ consists of board-certified anesthesiologists who have expertise in caring for patients undergoing cardiovascular procedures and surgery. They employ state-of- the-art physiologic monitoring and have certification in perioperative transesophageal echocardiography. They work with our cardiac surgeons to provide dedicated care for patients undergoing procedures such as:
- Coronary artery bypass grafting surgery (both off-pump and on-pump -- requiring cardiopulmonary bypass)
- Valve replacement and repair procedures (on pump, minimally invasive and transcatheter techniques)
- Minimally invasive cardiac surgery (revascularization and valve surgery)
- Robotic heart surgery
- Aortic aneurysm surgery (surgical and endovascular techniques)
Our anesthesiologists are also involved in many new cardiology and cardiothoracic procedures such as the percutaneous implantation of artificial heart valves and new electrophysiology (EP) procedures. New EP procedures include percutaneous treatments for patients with atrial fibrillation and other arrhythmias, as well as the insertion of specialized pacemakers and defibrillators. Each patient’s anesthetic plan is tailored to match his or her medical condition and procedure in order to enhance safety and maximize comfort.
Our anesthesiologists are experts at utilizing specialized techniques needed to care for patients undergoing complex thoracic procedures. They work closely with the health system’s thoracic surgeons, who commonly perform minimally invasive and innovative thoracic procedures to treat patients with diseases of the lung, esophagus and gastrointestinal tract, as well as thoracic tumors. Thoracic anesthesiologists commonly provide anesthesia and pain management for patients undergoing thoracoscopic lung resection, gastroesophageal reflux surgery and other thoracic procedures.
North Shore-LIJ Health System offers patients comprehensive chronic pain management services with many methods to help bring pain under control and manage the side effects of treatment. Once a patient’s healthcare provider contacts our service, the patient is evaluated and treated by a physician with expertise in chronic pain management. We provide medical management, injection therapies and implantation of pain control devices.
For patients who are followed by an outpatient pain management provider and are admitted to the hospital, we work with that provider to allow a smooth transition of care once the patient is discharged from the hospital.
Patients who are not followed by an outside pain management provider have the option of following up at one of our outpatient chronic pain management offices at the following locations:

Palliative Medicine Sevices
Palliative medicine is specialized medical care for people with serious illnesses. Seriously ill patients are known to live longer when they receive palliative care, which emphasizes quality of life while working alongside a patient’s standard medical treatment. Ideally, patients receive palliative care as soon as possible following diagnosis, but this care can be provided at any time to patients of any age – regardless of whether an illness is curable.
