A Standard of Excellence

North Shore-LIJ Stern Family Center for Rehabilitation has been recognized as a center of excellence in caring for the elderly and those needing short-term rehabilitation. It has had deficiency-free inspections for five years running from the New York State Department of Health — a rare distinction in the field — and last year received a score of 98 out of 100 from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations.

North Shore-LIJ Stern Family Center for Rehabilitation has a full-time medical staff available to care for the needs of its residents. The full-time medical staff includes geriatric specialists from the North Shore University Hospital, Division of Geriatric Medicine. In addition to the full-time medical staff, consulting specialists are available in rehabilitation medicine, neurology. orthopedics, ophthalmology, radiology, dentistry and psychiatry. Other subspecialists from North Shore University Hospital are available as required.

Physician's make daily rounds and are available to deal with complex medical problems. Should a need for more intensive medical care arise, residents can be transferred either to the acute geriatric unit at North Shore-LIJ Stern Family Center for Rehabilitation or North Shore University Hospital. Registered nurses with geriatric training are available around the clock, as are licensed practical nurses and certified nursing assistants.

A comprehensive new study ranks North Shore-LIJ Stern Family Center for Rehabilitation as one of the top nursing facilities in New York State, putting the center in an elite group of elder care providers recognized nationwide. Conducted by CareScout, a Wellesley, Massachusetts-based company that reviews quality of care data at nursing facilities, assisted living facilities and home health agencies nationwide, the study identified the top performing nursing homes in the New York Metropolitan area.

North Shore-LIJ Stern Family Center for Rehabilitation received an "AAA" rating, which is considered a perfect score. To receive an "AAA" CareScout rating, nursing facilities must meet exceptional quality of life and care requirements, maintain full compliance with all elder care laws and regulations, and be free of any deficiencies noted by state and federal health officials during their inspection processes. Other rating designations include "AA," "A," "B," "C" and "D." Of the 16,400 government certified nursing home facilities in the United States, only 151 received CareScout's highest "AAA" rating.

North Shore-LIJ Stern Family Center for Rehabilitation was only one of eight nursing facilities in New York State to receive the rating.
