January 12, 2012
GLEN COVE, NY -- Glen Cove Hospital’s Center for Spine Services was recently recognized as an Aetna Institute of Quality (IOQ) for Spine Surgery, a designation that highlights the Center’s expertise, excellent surgical outcomes and focus on the patient.
“This accreditation is another layer of credibility. It tells the community that we not only perform a large number of spinal procedures, but more importantly, we do them very well,” explained Vincent Leone, MD, director of orthopedic spine surgery at Glen Cove Hospital.
To qualify for the prestigious designation, Glen Cove Hospital underwent a rigorous review process, meeting strict criteria regarding the Center’s use of evidence-based protocols, follow-up support of patients, comprehensiveness of the program, education and training of the medical and nonmedical community and quality improvement.
Aetna offers IOQ designations like the one awarded to Glen Cove to give their members and the public valuable information about quality differences in healthcare.
Multidisciplinary Approach to Spinal Care
“We see thousands of spine patients each year. However, because we work closely with a multidisciplinary team of specialists, we are able to offer many nonsurgical treatment options that may benefit our patients before recommending surgery,” said Sanjeev Suratwala, MD, a spine surgeon at Glen Cove Hospital.
This multidisciplinary team of specialists, which includes neurologists, pain specialists, rehabilitation specialists, orthopedic spine surgeons and neurosurgeons, meets regularly to review individual patient cases and make treatment recommendations
“Our multidisciplinary approach to treatment is integral to the care we provide,” explained Dr. Suratwala. “This level of collaboration ensures world class care to our patients.”
Comprehensive Spine Services
Glen Cove’s Center for Spine Services offers the latest in spine procedures. Whenever possible, surgeons at the Center use minimally invasive techniques, which results in less pain and blood loss as well as a quicker recovery for the patient. However, they also have the expertise to perform complex surgeries. Some of the conditions treated at the Center include:
- back and neck pain
- spinal stenosis
- osteoporosis fractures
- herniated disks
- back and neck trauma
- pinched nerves
- degenerative disc disease
- scoliosis and other spinal deformities
“Patients always have a choice in medical care. And it’s wise to find the best,” said Dr. Leone. “We are proud to offer our patients exceptional spine treatment right here in our community.”
