Glen Cove Hospital Names New Emergency Medicine Chair

GLEN COVE, NY – The North Shore-LIJ Health System today announced the appointment of Leonardo Huertas, MD, as chair of emergency medicine at Glen Cove Hospital. Dr. Huertas was previously associate chair of emergency medicine, a position he held since 2007. Dr. Huertas succeeds John D’Angelo, MD, who was promoted to senior vice president of the health system’s emergency medicine clinical service line.
In his new role, Dr. Huertas provides leadership and management for the Glen Cove emergency department (ED) and works cooperatively with the members of the medical staff to provide emergency services for all patients who present to the ED. He also works with the heads of diagnostic and therapeutic departments to ensure availability, high-quality and effective uses of services for patients. Working closely with ED staff, Dr. Huertas is focused on continually providing the highest level of patient satisfaction, in which Glen Cove is rated among the best hospitals for ED patient satisfaction nationwide, according to Press Ganey Associates, Inc.
Dr. Huertas also monitors the community’s needs and is responsible for overseeing disaster preparedness and drills. He also directs education for medical residents and emergency medical services (EMS) workers caring for residents on the north shore of Long Island.
Dr. Huertas joined North Shore-LIJ in 1999 as an attending physician in the Emergency Medicine Departments at Glen Cove Hospital, LIJ Medical Center and North Shore University Hospital. He received his MD degree from SUNY Health Science Center in Syracuse, NY, and his BS degree from Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Huertas completed his internship and residency in emergency medicine at Christiana Care Health System, Medical Center of Delaware, Newark, DE.
He is a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians, the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine and the American Academy of Emergency Medicine.
Since 2004, Dr. Huertas has held the position of clinical assistant professor of emergency medicine at New York University School of Medicine. At Glen Cove Hospital he is chair of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and a member of its Sepsis Team IHI Collaborative and Congestive Heart Failure Initiative with Family Practice.
