Glen Cove Hospital Earns Joint Commission Certification in Total Hip and Knee Replacement Surgery

GLEN COVE, NY -- Glen Cove Hospital recently earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for its total hip and knee replacement surgery programs, demonstrating compliance with national standards for healthcare quality and safety. Glen Cove is the first hospital in Nassau County to be awarded the Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification in these specialties.

To earn this distinction, Glen Cove Hospital’s Total Joint Replacement Program underwent a voluntary onsite evaluation by a Joint Commission reviewer. The program was evaluated for compliance with Joint Commission stringent standards of care, including infection prevention and control, medication management, prevention of blood clots, controlling blood glucose levels and adherence to quality of care protocols. The assessment also included interviews with staff members and patients.

"In achieving Joint Commission certification, Glen Cove’s Total Joint Replacement Program has demonstrated its commitment to the highest level of care for patients undergoing total hip or knee replacement surgery,” said Eugene Krauss, MD , chairman of orthopedic surgery at Glen Cove Hospital. “Adhering to evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, our team is able to analyze and reproduce processes to continuously improve patient care and produce superior outcomes.”

Glen Cove Hospital has one of the largest total joint replacement programs on in the tri-state area, performing over 1,100 procedures each year. It is also one of the busiest programs in the region  for total joint replacements, all while maintaining a consistently low infection rate.

The total joint replacement program is comprised of a multidisciplinary team representing surgery, anesethia, nursing, pharmacy, quality, physical therapy, occupational therapy, food and nutrition, and social work. This team approach enhances the individualized, patient-centered care delivered at every stage – from pre-admission to acute hospital stay and discharge.

The Joint Commission evaluates and accredits nearly 18,000 healthcare organizations and programs in the United States.
