Phrostie Phenomena A Problem for Parents: Social Worker

MINEOLA, NY - Outrage from parents and politicians over the Memorial Day Weekend over Phrosties, an alcohol-laced slushie now tempting under-aged drinkers via social media, has prompted the State Liquor Authority to launch an investigation — and that’s a good thing according to a local social worker specializing in addiction issues.

“This just reinforces the point that parents have to be aware of what their children are doing on the Internet, “said Loretta Hartley-Bands, LCSW, program director, Mineola Community Treatment Center. “The Phrostie craze combines the two things that young people love most: unregulated alcohol in a colorful package and social media. What’s really frightening about this particular drink is that no one knows exactly what’s in the drink and who is distributing it. All we know is that youngsters are ordering it on Instagram and having it delivered.

The rainbow-colored drinks sell for $10 each. Consumers make their purchases on the Phrostie Instagram page after signing in with their own Instagram handle and address. Instagram boasts that deliveries are made 24 hours a day.

The Phrostie problem came to the attention of U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer over the weekend who expressed concern over the ease-of-access by underage drinkers.

The key word, according to Ms. Hartley-Bands, is communication.

 “Parents must speak with their children about the dangers of underage drinking and alcohol poisoning,” she said.  “Phrosties might go away, but they can easily be replaced  by something else. Parents must have this conversation.”
