GARDEN CITY, N.Y. — Orthopedic surgeon, Giles R. Scuderi, MD, vice president of orthopedic services for the North Shore-LIJ Health System, was recently appointed president of The Knee Society at its Open Meeting in San Francisco. The Knee Society, founded in 1983, is a closed membership organization of world-renowned orthopedic surgeons specializing in treatment of the knee joint.
An active member of The Knee Society, Dr. Scuderi has served on the Society’s Executive Board for the last decade in numerous leadership positions. He also chaired the Society’s Research Committee, and plays an instrumental leadership role in the development and world-wide distribution of The 2011 Knee Society Scoring System©, a premier and universally recognized outcomes measurement tool.
“It’s an honor to be elected president of The Knee Society and have the privilege to serve my colleagues,” said Dr. Scuderi. “To be recognized by my peers is truly a high point in my orthopedic career. It is my intention this year to guide the Knee Society through the changes in healthcare and promote philanthropy with greater involvement in Operation Walk USA, a non-profit volunteer medical services organization providing pro bono surgical treatments to uninsured or underinsured patients across the nation who have no access to life-improving treatment for arthritis or other debilitating bone and joint conditions.”
A graduate of SUNY Downstate College of Medicine, Dr. Scuderi completed his orthopedic residency at Lenox Hill Hospital and a knee fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Currently, Dr. Scuderi is the vice president of the North Shore-LIJ Orthopedic Service Line and an attending orthopedic surgeon at both Franklin Hospital and Lenox Hill Hospital. Dr. Scuderi has received numerous honors and accolades from peers and patients, including Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors Award and the Patients’ Choice Award.
Active in several professional societies, Dr. Scuderi is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons, as well as a member of the American Orthopedic Association and the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons. He has published extensively in many orthopedic journals and textbooks, edited several textbooks and continues to lecture worldwide on surgery of the knee, including topics on techniques in total knee arthroplasty and revision knee arthroplasty. “Surgery of the knee, especially total knee arthroplasty has been my personal focus for many years and I enjoy being an integral part of both current and future developments,” said Dr Scuderi.
