General Practice Dentistry Residency at NSUH

The Dental Residency Program at North Shore University Hospital, established in 1974, has evolved through the years into one of the most successful, innovative and highly sought after programs in the country. As proud parents we have watched as many of our graduates have achieved great success and leadership positions in clinical, academic and organized dentistry. "The North Shore Hospital Experience" is one that is based on mutual respect. A good teacher always gains more than he or she has given. Those of us dedicated to the success of our teaching programs realize the great responsibility that has been entrusted to us.

The Department of Dental Medicine at North Shore University Hospital offers a one year program in General Dentistry which provides a comprehensive clinical and educational experience in every area of dentistry. Residents are given the opportunity to advance to an optional advanced second year where they may serve as Chief Resident in General Dentistry. Granted full approval by the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association, the program is designed to provide residents with a progressive and exciting learning experience within the hospital setting, drawing upon the many varied resources of the entire North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System. It is one of the largest clinical medical programs in the country with over 1,200 residents and fellows and 90 graduate training programs. A total of 10 residents positions, with eight at the first year level and two at the second year level, are offered annually. The Department also offers a two year program in Implant Dentistry which begins as part of the second year and extends into a half-time fellowship program in the third year. Two individuals are accepted annually into this program.

The educational experience at North Shore University Hospital is challenging, intense, exciting and responsive to the needs of all involved. The process is ever evolving, which maintains its continued vitality.
