This one year fellowship is designed to provide focused and in-depth experience in the diagnosis of hematopoietic diseases. During their training, the fellows are responsible for the clinical diagnostic service of the hematopathology laboratory where they learn an integrated morphologic, immunologic, and molecular approach to the diagnosis and classification of hematopoietic neoplasms and disorders. Approximately 1000 solid lymphoid tissue specimens, 2500 bone marrow specimens (including over 100 acute leukemia cases) and over 10,000 flow cytometry studies are accessioned every year in the Hematopathology Division. Difficult bone marrow and lymph node cases are received for consultation from hospitals within the health system. Close relations with the Hematology/Oncology Division at Monter Cancer Center provide access to clinical rounds with the hematology attendings. There is comprehensive training in hemoglobinopathy and specialized coagulation testing, as well as rotations in full-service cytogenetic and molecular laboratories. The fellows are strongly encouraged to participate in research projects of the Division and to develop their own.
