Hospice and Palliative Care Elective at NSUH

The North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System Palliative Medicine Program offers an opportunity for medical students to develop a knowledge base in palliative medicine. The curriculum includes:

  • The Hospice and Palliative Medicine Approach to End of Life Care
  • Alleviating Psychological and Spiritual Pain in the Terminally Ill
  • Assessment and Treatment of Pain in the Terminally Ill
  • Management of Selected Non-pain Symptoms in the Terminally Ill
  • Communication Skills
  • Ethical and Legal Decision Making When Caring for the Terminally Ill
  • The Hospice/Palliative Medicine Approach to Caring for Patients with HIV/AIDS,
    CHF, COPD, Dementia, Stroke, Coma and Multiple Organ Failure in the ICU
  • The Approach to Caring for Pediatric Patients with Life Limiting Illness

Faculty

Medical students will spend time at North Shore University Hospital. The Clerkship will provide clinical experience in the Acute Palliative Care Unit as well as on the Palliative Consultation Service. Medical students will participate in daily rounds and interdisciplinary team meetings.
