Dr. Ernesto P. Molmenti completed his Residency and Chief Residency at Washington University School of Medicine/ Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, MO. During this time Dr. Molmenti also performed basic science research on liver and intestinal diseases. Dr. Molmenti was a clinical fellow in adult and pediatric abdominal organ transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh. He began his professional transplantation career at Baylor University Medical Center and Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, Texas and then joined The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as Associate Professor of Surgery. He obtained a Master of Business Administration in Medical Services Management from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and The Johns Hopkins University School of Professional Studies in Business and Education. Prior to joining North Shore-LIJ, he was Professor of Surgery and Director of Abdominal Transplantation at the University of Arizona.

Dr. Molmenti’s “Atlas of Liver Transplantation,” was published by W.B. Saunders/ Elsevier and subsequently translated into Chinese and Japanese. His book on “Intestinal and Multivisceral Transplantation” was released in 2009. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts, book chapters, reviews, and editorials.

Dr. Molmenti is currently a member of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. He served as ad-hoc scientific reviewer for the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases of the National Institutes of Health, and was a member of the Kidney/Pancreas Transplantation Committee of the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network / United Network for Organ Sharing. Dr. Molmenti has been invited to participate on several occasions at CNN Medical Consult on CNN. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Transplantation, and has served as reviewer for several journals in his specialty.

Dr. Molmenti is a member of multiple national and international societies. He has received numerous clinical, research, and teaching awards. He has been recognized in publications such as “Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare,” “Who’s Who in the World,” and “Who’s Who in America.” He was awarded a Faculty Research Fellowship from the American College of Surgeons for his pioneering work on proteomic characterization of organ transplant rejection.

Madhu Bhaskaran, MD
Medical Director, North Shore-LIJ Health System


Dr. Madhu Bhaskaran joined the health system in 2000. He is a trained nephrologist with experience in kidney transplantation from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India. Dr. Bhaskaran received additional training in Nephrology at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center and clinical training at the Kidney/Pancreas Transplantation Program, Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He is also a certified nutrition support physician.

Dr. Bhaskaran joined the health system as a transplant nephrologist in July, 2004. Since then, he has set up the pre-transplant evaluation program and expanded the services of the division.

Mala Sachdeva, MD

Dr. Mala Sachdeva earned her Medical Degree at New York Medical College.  She completed her Internal Medicine Residency, Chief Residency, and Nephrology Fellowship training at Montefiore Medical Center- University Hospital for Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She is currently board certified in Internal Medicine since 2004 and board certified in Nephrology since 2007.  In addition, she has completed extra certification as a Specialist in Clinical Hypertension in 2009, Certified by the American Society of Hypertension.  She joined the Nephrology Division of North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System in 2008 and serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at Hofstra University School of Medicine.  Her Professional Memberships include American Medical Association, American College of Physicians, American Society of Nephrology, National Kidney Foundation, Renal Physicians Association, American Society of Hypertension, American Society of Transplantation and New York Society of Nephrology.


Kenar D. Jhaveri, MD, FASN

Dr. Kenar D. Jhaveri joined the health system in 2009. He completed his residency training at Yale University New Haven Hospital in Internal Medicine and then a fellowship in Nephrology at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell campus. Dr. Jhaveri's clinical interests are in the improvement of outcomes in the post transplant care of the kidney transplant patients. He also shares interests in taking care of patients with renal complications following bone marrow transplantation and chemotherapy. He is a columnist for the ASN Kidney news for the section called "Detective Nephron." He also has developed teaching tools like nephrology crosswords for residents and fellows in nephrology.

Pat DeFlorio, RN, MSN, ANP
Transplant Coordinator, North Shore-LIJ Health System

 Ms. DeFlorio joined the health system in 1984. She is a trained Nurse Practitioner with extensive experience in caring for patients with kidney diseases. Ms. DeFlorio received additional training at the Kidney/Pancreas Transplantation Program, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, before joining as the Transplant coordinator for the health system.

She has been an integral part of the team that set up the pre-transplant evaluation program and expanded the services of the division.

Kristen Barry, RN, MSN, ANP
Transplant Coordinator, North Shore-LIJ Health System

 Ms. Barry joined the health system as a Transplant Coordinator in 2008. She is a trained Nurse Practitioner and has experience in caring for patients with cardiovascular and renal diseases. Prior to joining the health system team, Ms. Barry worked for five years as a Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Coordinator at the Mount Sinai Medical Center.

Joan Cappello, LMSW, ACSW

 Ms. Cappello joined the Health System in 1987 as a renal social worker, a position she held for 10 years, working with dialysis patients in the acute as well as chronic setting. She then moved to the Medicine Clinic, where she gained expertise in community resources for a varied patient population as well as functioning as research coordinator for clinical trials.

She joined the Kidney Transplant Program in 2007 where she addresses psycho-social issues related to transplantation, helping patients achieve an optimal outcome.


Marlene Goldstein, LCSW-R, ACSW

Ms. Goldstein joined the Health System in 1986 as a renal social worker, a position she held for nine years. In 1995 she was promoted to social work manager where she supervised social workers in both inpatient and outpatient clinical services. Ms. Goldstein joined the Kidney Transplant Program in 2007. She provides education and psychosocial evaluations to the living donor population.

Lisa Kiernan, RN, BSN, CDN, CCTN
Transplant Coordinator,

 Ms. Kiernan joined the health system in 2001 as a staff nurse and joined the transplant center as a Transplant Coordinator in 2009. She is currently certified as a dialysis nurse and as a transplant nurse. Ms. Kiernan received her ASN from SUNY Farmingdale and her BSN from Jacksonville University.

Barbara Cascone, BS
Administrative Support Associate

Ms. Cascone joined the Health System in 1992 and has worked in the department of surgery as an assistant to department chiefs for many years. Barbara received her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Business Administration from Adelphi University in 2002 and joined the Transplant team in July 2007 as an administrative associate providing support to the transplant physicians, patients, coordinators and ancillary staff.

Barbara Wrynn, RN
Outreach Coordinator, North Shore-LIJ Health System

Ms. Wrynn is a certified nephrology nurse with over 25 years experience in the nephrology field. She is currently employed as an Outreach Coordinator for North Shore Hospital’s Transplant Program, providing education about kidney transplant as a treatment option for patients with kidney failure.
