Vascular Surgery

Leading the Way in Vascular Surgery

Vascular surgery is a surgery specialty in which diseases of the vascular system (arteries and veins) are managed by medical therapy, minimally invasive catheter procedures and surgical reconstruction. Vascular surgeons may work to restore blood flow to an area of the body after trauma, disease or another issue damages blood vessels.

After the age of 50, most people experience some form of vascular problem. For some it may be little more than an elevated cholesterol level. For many, however, there are vascular problems or complications such as cardiac disease, hypertension, diabetes, kidney disease or lipid disorders.

The Division of Vascular Surgery at North Shore-LIJ Health System diagnoses and performs procedures to treat conditions affecting the circulatory system, including venous disease, vascular access and diabetic foot conditions.

More than 2,000 vascular procedures are performed annually by the nationally recognized vascular surgeons at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and North Shore University Hospital. These vascular procedures include:

  • Relieving the effects of blocked blood vessels
  • Treatment of aneurysms of the aorta (and other blood vessels)
  • Vascular access procedures (long terms IV treatments and hemodialysis ports)
  • Varicose vein treatment

For all vascular procedures, especially those where vascular surgery is required for correcting problems, staff rely on minimally invasive endovascular techniques to improve both short and long-term recovery.

The Vein Center for Varicose and Spider Vein Treatment

The Vein Center in Lake Success is a specialty treatment center offering vascular procedures for the treatment of varicose and spider veins. Our surgeons are board certified in vascular surgery and perform all vein treatments themselves, unlike spas or cosmetic centers where aestheticians are hired to operate lasers and do injection treatments. For an appointment, call (516) 233-3701.

Community Outreach

The community outreach program at North Shore LIJ's Division of Vascular Surgery offers continuing education programs for vascular patients relating to comprehensive disease management. In addition, institute staff provides community education programs and periodic free screenings to detect carotid artery disease, abdominal aortic aneurysms and peripheral arterial disease.

Basic Science and Clinical Research Programs

All vascular surgeons are involved in ongoing clinical research programs which are central to developing new and improved methods of understanding, detecting and treating vascular disease. By staying abreast of changes in the field of vascular health and surgery, our health system can provide the most modern treatment modalities to minimize discomfort and improve recovery time for patients undergoing vascular procedures.
